The Richtis Gorge is located on the northern side of the Lassithi Prefecture, between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. The path that traverses it starts northeast from the village of Exo Moulianna and ends at the rocky Richtis beach, east of the village of Kalavros. The total length of the route is approximately 3 kilometers, and the elevation difference between the entrance and exit is about 350 meters. The gorge still has plenty of water even in summer, which is utilized by a reservoir. It collects water from the heights of Drymias (918m) on Mount Orno via two main streams, Lahana and Mesa Moulianna, which merge near the beginning of the path.<\/p>

The gorge can be traversed in three to four hours on foot, depending on the pace. The route starts from the stone arched Lahana bridge, where it is said that during the population exchange (Greece \u2013 Turkey), Christians killed the Turks from the area who were trying to reach Sitia to flee to Turkey. The path continues through a lush landscape within the river, which is an oasis of coolness in Eastern Crete. The plane trees, oleanders, and sagebrush are countless, and the scents from the aromatic plants constantly alternate. Also impressive are the old water mills that visitors encounter along the way, reflecting the past.<\/p>

The highlight of the gorge is the beautiful Richtis waterfall, 20 meters high, which forms a lovely pool at its base and gives its name to the entire gorge. The word “richtis” means “waterfall” in the Cretan dialect and appears in many place names in Crete, both in its original form and as variations (richtis, rehtre, rehtar, richtira, etc.). The waterfall still has water even in summer, and one can enjoy swimming in its pool. Next to it, there is a bench under the plane trees, making the rest truly enjoyable. A beautiful ending to the journey is the exit from the gorge to the lovely pebble beach of Richtis, where there is a small grove with tamarisks, stone seats, tables, and a stone fountain with drinking water.<\/p>

WARNING! Avoid using sunscreen when swimming in rivers, as it destroys the local flora and microfauna.<\/p>

Extra tip: Visitors usually leave their car on the main road at Exo Moulianna. You can save up to half an hour of walking by descending from there and parking at the Lahana bridge. From there, the walk to the waterfall takes about 1.30-2:00 hours.
