Agia Fotia, one of the most beloved beaches of Cretans, is located 12 kilometers east of Ierapetra, in the idyllic area of the village of Agios Ioannis. This picturesque beach forms a small bay at the mouth of a stream that collects water from the drainage basin of the highest peak of Thrypti, the Afendis Stavromenos. The river, surrounded by plane trees, marks the historical boundary between the provinces of Ierapetra and Sitia.
The settlement gets its name from the beautiful church of Agia Fotini, which is located next to the river and just 200 meters from the beach. The beach is known for its tamarisk trees and impressive rocks, which have been intricately shaped by salt and wind. The sand consists of fine gray pebbles and the waters are calm and crystal clear.
Agia Fotia is well-organized, with tavernas, hotels, and a beach bar, making it ideal for a relaxing day by the sea. In addition, in recent years, the beach has become popular for beach volleyball tournaments, attracting more and more supporters.
At the eastern end of the beach, there is a spring in the rock that flows sweet water, offering a refreshing experience to visitors. Behind the western end, in the Katergo area, there is a second, secluded small beach, ideal for those seeking tranquility and solitude.
Agia Fotia combines natural beauty with modern amenities, making it an ideal destination for visitors of all ages who want to enjoy the sun and sea in an idyllic setting.
